Resolved Question: How would you explain what’s going on in my house?
I live in a very old house in Ohio. In 1913 there was such a flood from here clear to Dayton that hundreds were drowned. Adults, kids, animals………nothing was safe from the flood waters. The near neighborhood of Shawnee was hit worse because it’s in a valley. The Great Miami river runs directly behind my house. After the flood of 1913 tall land barriers were built to protect Piqua (my town) from another flood of that magnitude. Shawnee is directly across the river from me. If I swam across the river I’d be in Shawnee.I should also mention Miami county is old Native american land.
My house is “inhabited”,not exactly haunted,by an old lady in a long summer dress with tiny flowers on it. She came to me the first day my roommate & I were cleaning the house before moving in. I was on a chair cleaning shelves in the closet when I felt someone watching me directly behind me. I turned around and saw a shadow move away. I assumed it was my roomie. My roomie was in the living room polishing the oak trim and felt like she was being watched too. When she turned around she saw a shadow move away from her. She assumed it was me. After we were completely moved in I was on my computer and I felt a presence behind me. When I turned around this old lady (very nicely kept btw) was standing in the doorway watching me. I could see her as clear as my roomie, except she appeared to be “floating” a couple feet from the floor. I started talking to her, eventually named her Maude and have been talking to her ever since. She visits once in awhile, but not as often as in the beginning. I always told her she was welcome here and that we would keep her home clean and neat.I believe she had 2 dogs and 3 cats and a bird too, because I have seen all these animals in the house. My dog will stand nose to nose with these other two dogs and be content to lay right beside them. I don’t feel at all threatened here. It’s very comforting to know this old lady is here. She had a lot of old time flowers in the backyard which we continue to care for.I looked up the history of the house at our local library & found every person who had ever lived here. In the archives it only list one womans death while at this address. Her name wasn’t Maude, but we still call her that.
Do you think friendly ghosts of people and animals stay behind sometimes to watch over their old homes? What would keep a nice old lady from moving on to a better place?
Your thoughts? Any similar experiences?

Resolved Question: What do you think of my book so far?
This is just the beginning of the first chapter. And the prologue too. Tell me what you think?
Prologue
It’s strange, thinking about the past. I think I must have a selective memory, because often when I think back, it’s like a blur- random images and words swimming through my mind listlessly. I try to erase things that I don’t want to remember, because sometimes remembering is too much to bear. So mostly I amble along with the rest of the world, trying to blend in, never opening the door to my land of buried secrets. But I’m tired of forgetting. Tired of pretending. So now I’m going to remember everything, starting from the night it all began
Chapter 1
“God, Cassie! You just don’t get it, do you?” Trey wails, his face creased into a frown of exasperation. Fifty-seven, fifty-eight, fifty-nine, sixty. I stare at my watch as the second hand strikes 12. That makes it 4:53pm. I’ve been sitting under this tree in silence for a solid five minutes. I fiddle with a patch of daisies, pulling their petals off one by one, not daring to look up in case I cry. “Cassie? Please, just try to understand” he pleads, his voice softer now. I know he’s looking right at me, but I can’t look up. He’s not going to know how much this has hurt me.
Trey and I were set up on a double date by my best friend Scarlett and her date, Noel, last summer. The idea was to ‘keep it casual’ Scarlett had said. She wasn’t used to being in committed relationships – she was a total commitment-phobe, essentially. That was before her and Noel happened, anyway.
Scarlett chose the restaurant, of course. It was this funky place in the city, next to Okkervil River. The inside was charming, decorated in warm, upbeat colours. As you walked through the door, mirrors with tiny seashells dotted haphazardly around the edges could be seen lined up along the far wall. Most of the tables were taken; laughter and the feel of people having a good time radiated from every corner of the restaurant. I smiled. This was exactly Scarlett’s kind of place.
As I slid into the seat opposite Trey, I just had an instinctive feeling that he was a good guy, you know? His hair was dark chocolate brown, messily spiked up with gel, and his eyes were like sparkling emeralds. He grinned at me, glancing at the Glastonbury festival wristband I still hadn’t taken off from the week before. “I went to Glastonbury this year, too. Weren’t the Foo Fighters amazing?” he asked me. I felt a frisson of excitement light me up from inside. The Foo Fighters were my favourite band. I grinned at him. “God, yes! Did you hear them doing ‘Stranger Things Have Happened?’” I asked. “Oh yeah’ he says, happily. “That was off the wall.” He pauses for a moment. “It was pretty much the best festival I’ve ever been to, actually. Oh, and those burgers from the little café near the Main stage? Best things I have ever tasted, ever.”
“Ewww, don’t!” I say, giggling. “I’m vegetarian, so I wouldn’t know.”
“You’re kidding!” he says, looking genuinely shocked. “Dude, you totally missed out on those burgers, I’m telling you. They were good stuff.” We both laugh, and I take in the way his eyes crinkle when he does so, and the way dimples appear on his smooth, tanned cheeks.
“Wow, guys. I haven’t even introduced you yet!” I look up to see Scarlett and Noel staring at us bemusedly from across the table. “Oh, um… right.” I say, suddenly feeling a bit embarrassed. I glance over at Trey, to see him watching me with a look of amusement. I blush, and then curse inwardly. Why did I have to be born a person who blushes?
“Well anyway,” Scarlett continues. “Cassie, this is Trey. Trey, Cassie. Shall we order?”
“Sure” comes the voice of Trey, who seems to be studying his menu interestedly. “I think I’m going to have the Mexican Chicken Wings with Spicy Rice and…” He pauses. “Salad.” He turns to me. “I’m going to take a wild guess here, and say you’re feeling the Mediterranean Olive and Feta salad. Vegetarian, obviously.” He says, deadpan. Damn. How did he know I was going to order the Mediterranean salad? “Actually,” I say, nonchalantly, “I was going to order the Roasted Vegetable Pizza.” He studies me suspiciously, and I look at him defiantly, trying desperately not to start laughing. “Okay… cool.” he says slowly, breaking into a knowing grin. And in that moment, I knew this guy was going to shake up my life in unimaginable ways. But for once, I wasn’t afraid. I was letting go.
Please give me constructive criticism, but please don’t be rude. Thanks in advance!
Oh for goodness sake. If you think about it, someone couldn’t publish this, as i’ve only done about two pages of the first chapter! I don’t know about you, but I have never read a young adult book that consits of 2-3 pages. Even if someone did steal it, it’s a risk i’m willing to take. I have plenty of stories on the go so it wouldn’t really be much of a loss to me anyway.

Archdiocese, SARA reach agreement on riverfront property

tiffehr:
Google Maps caught Chester County, PA in its mid-winter color scheme. When colonists moved into the land, apparently nobody felt like using a carving out a field with fewer than 5 sides. Four sides must have been too English.
Before living in Pittsburgh, I lived in Savannah, GA, for 4 years. Savannah was the first planned city in the United States. James Oglethorpe designed the city around a series of squares (small, public parks) distributed on a grid. Steer your horse toward the river, you’re going north. Toward the ocean, you’re going east. Pretty intuitive stuff, and within a month of having moved to Savannah, I knew my way around quite well.
Not so for Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh from the sky looks like Chester County viewed through a kaleidoscope while taking LSD from the sky. I’ve lived here for 9 years, and 95% of the time, I still don’t have the foggiest notion which way I’m pointed. No kidding.
Moreover, the Western Pennsylvania Cultural Heritage Road Naming Policy mandates that no curvilinear road may bear the same name for more than 1/4 mile. If that sounds fun for getting and giving directions, consider the magnifying effects of Pennsylvania’s Confusing Signage Doctrine, initially established in the early 1400’s to repel potential invasion by Canadian steel trappers and maintained today in order to encourage the enclave-based settlement construction patterns favored by such city planning theorists and practitioners as Ryan Homes and Dr. Toll Brothers.
So 12 winding roads bearing 29 different names are strung together, labeled a color, and locally known as “belts.” Orange, red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. I live near the Green Belt. Don’t ask me for the street name – I couldn’t tell you if I wanted to. If I die here, an old man decades from now, I will still not know the precise location of Cranberry Township. I know you can get there by taking the Green Belt to Ingomar (road, township, or borough – I can’t recall), going left after the second sign for the Yellow Belt, staying on past Sorgel’s, crossing your fingers, saying three Our Fathers and spitting dip juice into a half-finished Mountain Dew can, and taking a hard right after the car wash near the Home Depot. Or maybe it’s a left. I’m not sure.
But you’ll know it when you get there. Good luck, call me if you get lost, and welcome to Pittsburgh.
