Resolved Question: Why is his ear folding?
(Sorry for asking this again – my original question went to vote right after I asked it, and would not allow me to extend it. I would like to see if there are any more ideas)
So…I have had my rat terrier for about a year and a half – he is approximately 2 1/2 yrs. old.
All this time he has had those big “bat ears” (see avatar).
In the last two days things have changed – one ear is dropping most of the time, and twice when he came back in from outside at night, both ears were dropped. Can mild cold do that? Its only been in the mid 40s here at night.
Today it is one, again:
http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af32…
http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af32…
http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af32…
I have heard of puppies ears changing, but he is an adult. I have never had any of my other dogs ears change.
As far as I know, nothing has happened to him – no signs of trauma. I know a lot of rat terriers have the tips of their ears folded, but this is like his ear is folded in half.
Is there something I can do?
Is there something I SHOULD do?
I know its just an ear, but I kind of liked his upright ears.
Thoughts, please?
I checked to see if there was any smell to the ear (like an infection) and there doesnt seem to be any.
I have fed him the same kibble (Flint River Ranch) since I first got him, with added salmon oil (this is new in the last few weeks).
I dont see a calcium/phosporus ratio on the bag, so Im not sure how I could tell if its changed.
All the dogs eat the same food, and nobody else has shown any changes.
I havent taken him to the vet…I wasnt sure if the vet could do anything about this. He just had his yearly checkup and shots three weeks ago, and he was fine, then.
I have a vet appt. for the chihuahua on Weds. I can ask them to look at him too, if this is something that is vet-worthy.
Im in southern CA – it usually doesnt get below freezing, and then only at night, when he is safely in bed with his jammies on.
) Its been in the 70s during the day this week.
This morning both ears are up (!!)
Thanks guys – I will give the vet a call on Monday to see what they think, and I’ll check to see if there are any breeders in my area.
If its a cartilage problem, maybe adding glucosamine to his diet will help – cant hurt.
